March 2020 RACC Member of the Month: Basecamp 550

In an ongoing effort to promote our local businesses and organizations, the Ridgway Area Chamber of Commerce is proud to introduce our March 2020 Member of the Month:
BASECAMP 550

Who are the owner of the business?

BASECAMP 550 is owned and operated by Sam and Heather Jaquette and a few family and friends are key players in the business’ success. They are located at 20725 Highway 550, Ridgway, Colo.

Please tell us about the owners, and what inspired them to buy and operate this business.

Sam was first introduced to Ridgway by a family friend in 2008, which led to many winter trips out here for snowboarding, soaking at the hot springs, and enjoying the backcountry. While Sam and Heather were living in their Westfalia in Santa Barbara, they decided to spend a few months in Ridgway during the winter of 2015. They camped in their vintage Airstream at the Weber RV Park (now Basecamp 550) and fell in love with the area even more. When the opportunity to acquire the campground and create something together was presented, Sam and Heather welcomed the project with open arms.

Why did you decide to run a business in the Ridgway area?

Ridgway is a very charming and special place. We saw the potential to give an old campground some new life in hopes to share it with many folks for years to come.

What are the types of accommodations?

We have an array of “glamping” (glamorous camping) accommodations that vary from canvas wall tents to tiny homes and vintage Airstreams. We also have standard campsites for travelers with their own RVs.

What do guests say in their reviews about staying at Basecamp 550?

Everyone seems to love the canvas tents that stay cozy warm – even throughout the winter. Waking up with our scenic views of the San Juan's and the valley floor is mentioned in many reviews as well.

What’s new and unique at your property?

Glamping isn't a new concept but we try to make it attainable for those wanting an alternative to your standard hotel room. We're getting ready to open our clubhouse for guests to gather and grab a cup of coffee before heading out on their daily excursions.

Why do you value being a Ridgway Chamber member?

Being a member of the Ridgway Chamber has provided exposure and resources, which is helpful for any small business where many hats are worn. We are grateful to the Ridgway Chamber as well as the rest of our local community for supporting us in our endeavors.
