Black Canyon

“No other canyon in North America combines the depth, narrowness, sheerness, and somber countenance of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison,” Wallace Hansen wrote after studying the geology of the region for several years.

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is only 40 miles from Ridgway via Highway 550 north to Montrose, then Highway 50 east. Spend time visiting the Ute Indian Museum in Montrose along your way. The canyon has an excellent range of hiking trails, cross country skiing in the winter, and is a world-class destination for rock climbers and fly fishing.

Start your exploration at the Visitors Center where you can find excellent information about the park, as well as hiking and driving maps. The Black Canyon Astronomy Society hosts star viewing nights. For those interested in a more interactive experience in the canyon Peak Mountain Guides offers guided rock climbing in the Black Canyon April through November with AMGA certified rock guides.
