Three Tips — How to Approach High Altitude Tailwaters, Uncompahgre River at Pa-Co-Chu-Puk
Winter fishing at 7,000’ is alive and well at Paco. Steady tailwater flows keep it fishable year-round, but success comes down to details.
1. Layer Smart – Cold mornings and fluctuating temps mean comfort is key. Start with quality socks and build from there. Warm anglers fish better.
2. Go Stealthy – Lower flows and clear water demand 5x–7x tippet, smaller flies, yarn indicators, and softer presentations. Less splash, more eats.
3. Dial Your Depth – Use micro split shot to fine-tune sink rate. In 40-degree water, trout won’t move far. Your drift has to meet them exactly where they’re holding.
And yes, there are still bugs. Midges and BWOs stay active all winter. Size down and fish technical.
